--this is what i have to suffer through:
" As a hybrid text, parody is charged with an especially potent inter-textual activation. This commingling of multiple texts within a single textual system generates a bitextual structure comprised of a set of target texts and their reformulation in a parodic text."

Last time i checked, didn't english have more words than any other language? why do writers insist on using ones that no one has heard of like commingling or heteroglossia? why can't a scholar write a paper that doesn't make me bust out the webster's every thirty seconds. Also, what is up with these dudes just making up words to suit their fancy. i spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out what "metanarratives" means.

--i'm the only person in america that graduated high school without reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" so i'm going to read it now. in fact, i'm going to read a bunch of books about the south in preparation for my trip. faulkner, you're next bitch.

tonight, i had the "pleasure" of witnessing first-hand one of the most pathetic displays of football in the history of the NFL. it was quite an "honor" to witness the first shutout in oakland in 25 years. i cannot believe the Raiders played so poorly. the offensive line couldn't give aaron brooks 2 seconds to throw the ball. i cannot believe the defense gave up 27 points to the chargers offense. Schottenheimer's play calling was more predictable that i've ever seen in a pro football game, and it was still a blow out. it's going to be a long season. i did see a few good fights though.

i hate santa cruz

the thought of having to move back to Santa Cruz in a few weeks is giving me a stomach ache. I don't know how i am going to get through this year. i didn't learn anything all year. why are my parents spending so much money for me to waste so much time. i find the condescending arrogance of the townies there to be very aggravating too. i find that because of the political correctness on campus, it is impossible to have any honest discourse on race, gender, and class. the problem is that that's all we ever talk about in class. we have organizations that spend far too much time working in token gestures, such as the group which wants to change the spelling of the women's studies department to the womyn's studies department. can there be a campus social activity that is not a protest? i also feel like i meet the same people on campus over and over again. "Yeah, so we're are you from?... San Jose, no way, i'm from Fremont... small world." I probably should have gone to some state school in the south were i could have enjoyed college football to it's finest.

The North

Got back from the North today. I like the North a lot, maybe even more than London. Their accents are adorable and they are friendlier. Liverpool was awesome, I saw two Liverpudlian girls get into a fight in the street. Leeds was cool too, it reminded me of Billy Elliot. The highlight was probably having a beer in the Cavern in Liverpool. It was completely empty sans Tess, Sandie and myself. I couldn't believe we were in one of the most famous bars in the world by ourselves. We watched "the Wind that Shakes the Barley" last night in Leeds. It was weird watching an anti-British film in Britian.

London

sorry, i haven't gotten a chance to get back to you all till now. England has been awesome. Wimbledon was amazing. I saw everyone. John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors were hanging about. I saw Venus and Nadal practicing up close. And I got returned tickets to center court for only 5 pounds. ( a 80 pound value!). Saw one of the men's semi finals, and i didn't even have to wait in line at all. The highlight for me was meeting '98 champ Jana Novotna, and talking to her for a second. London is pretty impressive. every other building is beautiful and intricate. The Tate Modern is one of the coolest places i've ever been. One Saturday, i saw graham coxon play a free concert in Finsbury park. Tessa was chatting with the lead singer from the Duke Spirit. I'm starting to realize that San Francisco kinda sucks. There's more beauty, history and culture on one block of London than the whole of SF. I'm leaving for Liverpool in a few hours, so i won't be able to check this for a few days. I'll try to get back to you by the end of the week.

Portland: A Short Chronology

Day 1- Arrived in P-Town in the morning and quickly realized that Portland is where all the cute white girls from Santa Cruz have been exiled to. Went shopping on trendy 23rd st. Met my future wife at the levi's store. then went to the world's largest bookstore, which was incredible. Picked up maria later and had dinner at a cool Cajun restaurant filled with Hipsters and such. I began to notice that the hipsters in Portland are way cooler that those in SF or SC. they're much more approachable and genuine. the waiters at montage (the cajun restaurant) were incredible. They were definitely cracked out of their minds and screaming at each other across the place.

Day 2- Woke up late and drove to Multnomah ( I hope i spelled it right) falls. Quite beautiful. Went to a cool bar called the Doug Fir. It was a log cabin-esque bar which caters to bohemian types. Maria got smashed.

Day 3- Went to Hawthorne Street to go thrift store shopping. Great clothes, but after trying on a few shirts, realized that i no longer fit into Large anymore. I need to hit the gym. later went to Bagdad Theatre to watch syriana. It was brew and view, which meant that you could order beer and pizza while watching the film. Syriana was disapointing though.

Day 4- got German Food served by the cutest waitress ever. At this point, I decided that I must move to Portland for the sake of my blue balls. So many Tasty, Tasty Ladies. That night we went back to The Doug Fir to watch Jason Collett perform. The venue was very small and very cool. Halfway throught the set, Leslie Feist came out of the crowd and played drums for him and sang a duet. After the show, we were hanging out with her drummer and someone whom i suppose was a roadie. They were very cool people, but the bartender kicked them out for drinking their own beer in the place. Too bad, we could have scored some free tickets for her show.

Day 5- Hung out around the Pearl District and Old Town. We went to this doughnut shop which specialized in specialty doughnuts. There was one with fruit loops on it! Jennifer's parents arrived that night and i was treated to some delicious Bul Go Ki. Mmmm....Delicious.

Day 6- Helped Jennifer move into her new house. collapsed on a pile of clothes around 12pm.

Day 7- Went to Seattle with jen and her parents. Seattle was really beautiful, on a par with San Francisco on a nice day. I don't think the people were as cool as those in Portland, but then again, we didn't hang around much with the locals. I'll have to go back. With no pre-planning on my part, we happened apon the first starbucks ever. I got chills down my back. That night, when returned to portland, we went to a bar and got pretty drunk, played pool and met some girls from santa cruz. a perfect last night in Portland.

Day 8- Flew back to the Bay, refreshed, refueled and very hung over.

Portland is quite awesome. Despite the lack of minorities, I feel comfortable here. We went to a "brew-n-view" last night to watch Syriana. It was a movie theatre which served food and beer. Genius.
